Male sparrowhawk eating a woodpigeon. Just for you bunnyhuggers out there ...the pigeon must weigh about twice the sparrowhawk. There is only one way it can kill the pigeon - by eating it alive. I watched the victim struggling for about 15 minutes as our "nice" predator plucked the breast feathers and tore strips of meat off it. The bird spent about two hours feeding and even visited the carcase the following day to pick the last scraps off it. It was never allowed to eat in peace and quiet - I reckon there were about 15 crows mobbing the sparrowhawk high up on neighbouring trees for much of the time...the racket was quite dramatic.
